An easy mistake to make. If the author of the article did his research based on "Packard a History of the Motor Car and the Company" he may have come across the following:

"In the lessor-priced lines it was difficult in fact to find a non-Clipper; the only such bodies were for convertibles and commercial cars. This means that the convertible was the only passenger car being built in the Six and Eight lines which did not offer Clipper styling. Likewise, in the One-Sixty and One-Eighty series, the emphasis for standard-wheelbase cars was Clipper, non-Clippers among those vehicles consisting of 138- and 148-inch wheelbase limousines, formal sedans and touring sedans, as well as Rollson and LeBaron customs."

If he focused on the sentence I have italicized, I can easily see where the error may have come from.

Yes. And the Standard Catalog (at least the edition that I have) doesn't make finding the correct information for 1942 Packards any easier. What a cluster-f--- that chapter is.

Not trying to stir the kettle, and not having read the article in question, could this '41 Clipper 'vert by Darrin have had anything to do with it?
