Carburetor Adjustments

When going through the Carburetor information I cant seem to find anything in reference to the initial position of the throttle adjustment screw (the screw that adjusts the throttle lever stop). Currently the screw is all the way out on my carb (lever is resting directly against the stop). The idle speed is still running to fast, and I have no adjustment since the screw is all the way out. So the question is before I pull the carb, and go through all the adjustment checks, where should that screw be set initially so I can index the rest of the adjustments off that point.

I just cant understand why that is not reference in any of the adjustments sections. It just say to loosen the throttle lever screw to ensure the throttle plates are fully closed against the carb bore. Just that only happens when the screw is fully out.

This is on a Carter WGD 2102s.

Did u have the throttle blades removed?????

The throttle blades have a top and a bottom. They should not be installed upside down. AAlso when installing the throttle blades the shaft and blades need to be centralized with each other to allow for some endplay in the throttle shaft. Otherwise some binding of the blades or the shaft will disallow the blades to close fully.

Also cheque the throttle lever to be sure that it is TITE on the shaft and is not loose on the shaft. They are usualy staked and the stake will loosen (in some cases) over time and miles.

While the engine is idleing too fast take a small wooden dowel or other suitable probe and try to push the throttle blades closed. If that happens then there is binding throttle blades or loose throttle arm on the shaft.

Of course all of this assumes that hte choke cam and other linkage on the carb is correct.

If it's a 4 bbl carb then cheque the secondary blades to be sure that they are closed all of the way too.

Make sure the bowl vent is not clogged or inoperative.

There is most likely some kind of adjustment screw on the choke cam for setting cold hi-idle. Probably need to back that screw out all of the way too.

Sometimes internal leaks in the carb (missing accel. pump check ball, bad gaskets etc) can cause gas to flow freely thru the idle ports. That coupled with a vacuum leak can cause a high idle condition as u have described.

The Chilton has a bit different take on the adjustment but Motors is about the same. Anyway, a couple aftermarket pieces for a different frame of reference.
