Smoke Problem

When I start my 51 cold, the engine runs real smooth with hardly any exhaust. However, when it starts to heat up toward normal operating temp, I get more smoke and a little rougher idle. Any thoughts or experiences on this is appreciated.

Auto choke adjustment? Try starting it with the air cleaner off and see if the choke is still partially closed when the rough idle and smoke occurs.

I checked that. The choke seems to be working properly.

Does it ever "clear up' at normal temps or does it continue to idle rough and smoke? The only other thing that comes to mind would be a thermal/electrical related failure...perhaps the coil or ignition condenser could be acting up when the temps rise. Or perhaps a stuck heat riser on the exhaust causing too much back pressure?

What color? Blue = oil, black = gas, white = water vapor (normal on cool damp days until the car warms up).

I would say it is kind of blue. I did a compression test and that seems ok 110-120.

Same color of smoke my '54 is generating, also the compression on my motor is prefect across the board.

I put this post up some time ago about my car smoking and running like crap.

Yesterday I switched out the old carb with another old carb and the smoke went away substantially. The car is still running like crap but at least I know the problem appears to be the carb.

Does anybody have a line on a good Carter carb at a decent price? I sure hate to spend $225 just to have it rebuilt.

Assuming the castings are all in good shape, why not rebuild the one you have - the kit is only about $50 and is almost certain to give a better result that just another used carburetor. Or, if you apprehensive about rebuilding it yourself (and they're pretty damn simple), there's got to be a hobbyist in your area who would be willing to do it with you. Join a PAC or PI region near you and ask around.

This is an excellent solution. I'd never done anything like this before. The advice I got was

1. Spread out a cloth to keep track of all parts removed.

2. Place parts closest to the side they came off of.

3. Religiously follow the order of your kit's instructions.

4. Get a stool and a cup of coffee.

I took notes as I progressed, just in case I screwed up.
100 something parts, all back together and operational.

Yes, you can!
