Water Jacket for 32

Dear All,

I need to find a water jacket for my 32 900. The one on the car does not have any holes for coolant to escape and cool the valves*. It is also highly corroded.

Does anyone have any experience with PI Automotive?

http://www.piautomotive.com/Packard%20Products.htm

They appear to make what look like good reproduction water jackets.

Thanks,

Tom

*Yeah, I am worried about what I will find when I pull the head!

I have a spare here. I believe it is NOS and never used. I do suggest having it electro-nickel plated to reduce internal water corrosion. I guess you could paint the visible side Bell Green after it's plated. Just make me a reasonable offer and it's yours.

It is not possible to paint both sides of the distribution plate with the holes for corrosion resistance. Putting anti-freeze solution in the motor and adding every few years a can of rust inhibitor will give you 50 years of Packard enjoyment.

Fred,

If you are willing to use a large amount of epoxy primer, you can paint both sides of the plate. On my 30 I filled the water jacket to almost full with primer, wrapped the jacket tightly with saran wrap, flipped the jacket around a few times, and then drained out the excess paint.

The difficulty is making sure you get the metal super clean and properly prepared.

This was probably not absolutely necessary, but it was a fun, very messy little project.

Excess paint draining can be seen here:http://packardpaddock.com/page2/page35/files/IMG_1245.html

Tom,

I have a 1930 Packard 726. Do you know how to remove the shell from the radiator? I think the thermostat is stuck.

Larry,

You need to remove the hood lacing on the radiator. It is held on with a bunch of split rivets. Once the lacing is off, you will see 12 or so brass machine screws with lock washers and backing nuts. Remove these screws. The shell can then be pulled up and then forward to remove. There will be rope packing in hole for the radiator fill tube. When you put it back together, be sure to grease this packing.
