would this work....says small block chevy. its pretty cheap, much cheaper then having them installed.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AAF-ALL96470/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-900130/

there are some others for about 60 or so....then there are the universal ones that are about 140.

does anyone know the diameter size needed for the Packard V8 cam bearings?

has anyone done this themselves and had success with a particular brand installer?

thanks,

Hank

IIRC The chevy uses all same diameter cam bearings. Packard V8's use a progressively smaller diameter cam bearings from front to rear. Double check manual and parts cataloug for verification. The Chevy tool is probably too short with only one mandrel. I have a chevy tool here but if i remeber rite it would not work on the Packard V8. Measure the ID of the cam bearings ALL of them from front to rear.

Why are u changing the cam bearings????? If they look ok and are with in service spec then LEAVE THEM ALONE!!! They only turn 1/2 crank speed. Don't change them just to get a warm fuzzy feeling. If they're bad or worn then definately change tham.

they are crap and need to be changed.

i'll probably just have the shop do it, but for the price to have them install them i thought i could have me a new nifty tool and could do it myself and learn something.

the universal ones are all over 100 bucks.

Nope, the SBC uses stepped cam bearing diameters, as do most engines. This is a production time saver as all the bearing bores can be bored simultaneously by one bar with stepped bits. Then, all the bearings can be loaded on one driver and pushed home with one stroke.

Most cam bearing tools are universal. They have adapters for all common engine families. I use the Dura Bond.http://www.dura-bondbearing.com/Products/Products/CamBearingTools.aspx

Ok. I looked it up. According to the 1989 FACTORY AUTHORIZED Chev service manual the 305 Vin "Y" has stepped cam journals. All others including 350 has only ONE diameter specified for cam journal size. There was a mid 70's 260 V8 that was used in pontiac too that had one size.

I'll try to double check the 327 and 283 bibles.

On the Packard cam bearings;
The service manual gives very little info on the actual process of replacing the cam bearings. It mite be advisaeable to install the REAR AND FRONT cam bearings BEFORE installing the center cam bearings.

Installing the front and rear cam bearings first will help to keep the others in better alignment. Try the cam into the new bearings (front and rear installed only) to determine any binding. Then proceed with other more central cam bearings.

Maybe JV can give more detail on the installation. The manual gives nearly no info and no pic of tool that i can find.

This is way OT and not germaine to Packard V8s, but facts is facts and terminology is required for understanding:

Keith is referencing is the camshaft journal diameter, and/or the camshaft bearing ID, which is 1.8682" for all five journals. The cam bearing driver ID is a rubber ring which can expand to handle several IDs.

The block cam tunnel bore is what determines the bearing driver adapter OD necessary to clear the block.
Chevrolet V8s - 262, 265, 267, 302, 305, 307, 327,350, 400
Block cam bearing housing bore diameters:
#1 2.0190"
#2-5 2.009"
#3-4 1.990"

The block bores are what the bearings go into and they have three different diameters.
