Vibration in gear selector lever

Intermittently, when I shift into second gear on my column-mounted gear shift lever, the lever handle vibrates/chatters a bit. If I shift from 1st gear to 2nd just so, it does not vibrate, but most of the time it is hard to find the 'sweet' spot so that the car goes into gear with out the handle vibrating. The car seems to shift and run just fine. Is there a way to adjust this 'play' in the gear shift handle so that it does not vibrate?

Thanks again

Here is what Packard had to say about rattle. With the later linkage being very similar to earlier models which did have many bulletins and articles discussing various problems caused by worn bushings and linkage, that might be a place to start.

The 51 SM in transmission troubleshooting section also talks about transmission buzz and rattle in addition to the gearshift rattle. Perhaps something in that description might also apply. Not sure what the difference is between the two.
