Antifreeze question

Good morning chaps.

I'm just getting my car ready for spring and, having drained the water over the winter, is there any reason why I shouldn't use regular antifreeze / rust inhibitor when refilling?

When I drained in before Christmas, the water was crystal clear (not bad considering the water hadn't been changed for at least 5 years!)

Dear kts:

The cooling system should not be left empty during storage because it will rust.

That aside, depending on the conditions water is fine providing you use a rust inhibitor which are becoming rather obscure.

Anti-freeze/Coolant will raise the boiling point around 15 degrees in a non-pressure system. Ethylene glycol was available at the time your car was built. The higher boiling point will help around hot spots.

Yes, do as Tim Cole said and use an IAT (Inorganic Acid Technology) based coolant, such as ethylene glycol. They come under the brand names of Peak, or Zerek Original in the USA.

OAT (Organic Acid Technology) base coolants are HARMFUL to our Packards.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't drain it merely because it was off the road for winter - I've been detailing the engine so have had the rad out and water jacket cover off etc.
