I am looking for a 39 or 40 160 coupe with the super 8. Prefer overdrive. No OD is o-k too.

There were no 160s in 1939 as 1940 was the first year to use the designation. There were, however, Super Eights.

Thanks. I am learning the details as I go. Either way, a Super 8 coupe. I tend to lean towards the '40. Being the 39 and 40 are really close, I could go either way.

39 engine is more interesting mechanically, while the 40 engine is more "modern". the dash on a 39 is way better looking, if proper. overddrives slightly different. Best thing to do is see and drive both before deciding, and of course submitting to the Pinfo jury for support.

The 1940 R9 is much simpler and easier to get parts for that than the earlier R6 and many other differences too. I’ve owned both 1939 and 1940 Packards, albeit Junior models, I would take the 1940 any day.

Update: Leaning towards the 40 has tilted a little more today. Unless a 39 Super Eight coupe comes along at a really good deal.

Update.

Made a deal on a 1940 120. Going to pick it up on Tuesday. So now, I am looking for a 356 Super 8 engine.

It's not a 160, but it's pretty close.

There are several mechanical differences between the 120 and the 160, not just the engine. For starters, the 356 will shred a 120 overdrive...
At this point, I would suggest viewing the 120 as a starting point, see how you like it, and when the opportunity to compare to a 160 presents, you will have the 120 experience to work from. You can't just switch out the 120 motor for a 356....

I can refer you to my engine builder who has a 356 in line to build on spec...

This 120 doesn't have OD. I did find a later trans with R11 OD that will get put in. The trans isn't a big deal as I own a transmission shop. While I've never built a T-85, from what I've read so far, they are decently strong.
Is there any compatibility reason why a 356 can't bolt in place of a 282? Like mounts, bell housing or length?
