My 11, 10 and 7 year olds have already made the plans of who gets the Packard and who gets the Corvair. Then they informed me that I have to buy a third cool car so the other kid gets one too.

That link lists the Packard as a 1948. In the beginning of the movie there is a subtititle that says "Hollywood 1947".
Ahh, movie magic. :)

Re: bump steer

I thought bump steer was the change in geometry of the steering as the suspension moved through its travel. In other words, a car with no bump steer will hold its alienment as the tires hit bumps.
A car with bump steer problems would have a tire toe in or out when it hits a bump. This sets up a really weird feeling when going around a curve, hitting a bump with the outside tire and having the car dart in an unexpected direction.

On the valve covers of my '54 Clipper I bought the x-profile o-ring cord stock from McMaster and then bonded it to the covers with some Permatex adhesive. It's nice, I can take them off and put them back on without having to worry about the seal.

Re: Hot Engine Won't Start

Something else that will slow down a starter is an overly advanced ignition system.
There is a reason that you have an initial setting, a vacuum advance that comes in immediately, and a mechanical system that works as the engine revs up to a speed that more matches the speed of the burning gas. So if either advance system is stuck (or the initial is too much) the easy to fire warm fuel mixture is burning and pushing against the pistons as they come up instead of waiting until they are near TDC and slowing down the starter. An easy way to check this is when it's hot and turning slowly, pull the coil wire off the distributor and see if it cranks at normal speed.

My kids are 11, 10 and 7. They are already fighting over who gets the Packard when I'm dead.

If any one has a brass cap nut like that, I could copy it.
