thought it was a good time to do something more mechanical. so i took apart the BTV unit for cleaning and rebuilding.

here are a bunch of pictures showing where everything came from and/or goes on.

the canister seems okay, but the piston has pitting and a vice grip indention as does the piston on the end of the push rod.

looks like the bleed back hole was closed off by the plate gasket.

also note that the vacuum hose was wired on to keep it from coming off for whatever reason.

this unit has obviously been broken into before. i have no idea what that grey washer is on the compensator valve either.

the diaphragm is original it appears by the date. I also have no idea what that gooey fiber material was between the floor plate and the canistor top. i guess to keep water from getting into the car idk. i'm guessing some black rtv will be a suitable replacement.

Hank - After looking at your BTV photos, I am so glad I had Ross remove the one on my 55 Clipper and install a standard unit. What a mess! Can't wait to see your progress on this job. Expect it will be a museum piece when you get through. Take care.

Get a repro - available in stainless.

Though the gasket extends around the back hole, isn't it actually open to the reservoir by virtue of the channel that's stamped along the perimeter in the cover plate? Though it's been several years since I rebuilt one of these units, I seem to recall that was the case with the gasket on every one of the half dozen or so that I ever removed the cover from.

I've only ever had a problem with that hose coming off when it had been replaced by a piece of fuel hose, which is simply too stiff for the purpose. The formed/molded OE hose was more pliable and had sufficient grip to stay put. The one in your pic looks more appropriate than fuel hose, but appears to have been cut from a bulk roll. That wire, however, is a poor choice to cinch it.

Yes, the residual check valve is of a later production design and superceded the original design for rebuild.

Should be a gasket, but I don't recall it being gooey. Perhaps whoever was into this one coated the original gasket material with some of the tarry aviation gasket sealer for reuse. Rather than waste so much RTV, the shape is simple enough to cut a new gasket, but I'm not sure what material to recommend.

1. i will
2. on new gasket i plan to cut off the portion covering around the hole anyways.
3.hopefully the rebuild kit will have a suitable hose
4.agreed
5.i just figured black rtv is cheap and makes a great seal.

i recently purchased a couple of new backup lenses from ebay. I also already have one NOS in the box. One of the ones i bought from ebay was already mounted on the chrome trim. i got lucky and it had a nice new rubber seal as well, which will help me find material to reproduce another one for the other side.

also, i used one of the carbs i got from Gerry, and the incorrect one i had laying around that was originally on my car when i bought it so i could mock up the breather to see how it all fit together. i have since purchased another correct carb from Gerry that will go along with the other one to Daytona for a rebuild and restoration at the same time. i will keep the one that is workig on my car now as a back up and for parts.

i found a center piece for the mock up of my linkage. this is where the stock linkage will connect to. then i will run threaded rod on each side to two other rod ends connecting the carbs. this is all adjustable from both ends, so that is nice. http://www.midwestcontrol.com/series.php?id=186#

The hose coming off is a problem some have experienced recently. It seems as if the thing loosens -- or maybe stiffens -- and gravity takes over when the pedal goes all the way down. Others have resorted to a fastener of some sort. I doubt that hose will be included in a standard rebuild kit unless you elected to go super deluxe no hold bars replace everything.

Looks like you have the later style lid with the slightly raised channel Brian mentions which should be used with the later style BTV's. Many have had the perfectly flat earlier style lid which does block off the port if the later gasket is used with the BTVs having the port at the top.

IIRC, there is a gasket about an inch wide around the perimeter of the toe board for the dust/water seal to floor. I believe the stuff in the middle over the BTV should have been the roughly 1/8" thick asphalt/felt sound deadening material Packard was so fond of using.

garage time moved to the z3. mixture deviations....meaning running lean....and misfire on cylinder 5.

spark plug 5 had oil leaking on it from the valve cover seal....which would also explain my vacuum leak.

all seals and vacuum lines will be replaced, then back to the Packard.

z3 is back together, but still throwing codes. I think it is the race thermostat I put in it. that is put away for now...i'm on to another project.

since car show season is coming up and I have no car to drive or show, except the modern z3, I decided to move my 70 Dart swinger home and give it some TLC.

My kid is getting old enough to enjoy car stuff and wants to be out there with me more. so this way I can freshen up the running car and we can enjoy it this spring while I shift back to the Packard.

plus it gives me a rotation of cars so I don't get bored or burnt out on any particular one.

here is the link to my 1970 Swinger rebuild/restoration/refresh if you would like to following along.

http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=263029

don't worry...the Packard is still on my mind.
