Hank, you will need to use a GL-5/EP gear oil in the Diff, GL-1 for the Trans is ok. I use 85W-140 GL-5/EP in both Trans and Diff. Using anything but GL-5/EP gear oil in the Diff will result in it being damaged. EP stands for Extreme Pressure which is what the Packard hypoid type Diff requires.

thanks JW! I prefer Lucas or Mobile 1, so I wonder if this would work. says it exceeds GL-5. I didn't see anything with EP designation. but this Lucas says heavy duty.

edit: I did see this that says extreme pressure in the description.

JW...what oil filter do you use? the one in mine says NAPA, but I forgot to look at the part number on it.

NAPA doesn't show one for my car online, so I'm concerned about how old my filter is.

Most of the drop in canister filters are the same:

Napa 1080
Wix 51080
Fram C134PL

I know Jim used the same filter as above in his 39 Super 8, and is the same filter on my '54.

Most of the parts stores around here never have them in stock, but can get them from the warehouse within 24hours. Buy two, keep one on shelf.

looks like the fram is half the price of the others and can be had at autozone on order.

doesn't appear to be any handle on the fram, so concerned about retrieval from the holder in the future.

I prefer the Wix or Napa more than Fram filters. But all those filters have a lot of room between the side of the filter and the housing. So not difficult to remove, even without the handle. Either way, have a drip pan or rag ready as they all drip oil when removed.
