Is there an identification page for Packard transmissions, similar to this one on engines?

Sadly no. As far as I know, Packard never published anything that could be used to derive that info.

Agree. The only info I remember seeing with early trans numbers is a 53 SC article with some starting serial numbers used in 26th series trans. In that article there is no way to correlate a specific number with a model. Other years with the original style Ultra probably used the same format but no specific number ranges that I have found.

Twin Ultras used a number format in 55 that is different from 56 so unlike the 56 models, without a specific bulletin outlining the 55 numbering scheme there appears to be no easy way to see which model used a particular trans or how many were made. In 56 they changed to a format similar to the Utica engine number with a letter followed by some numerals so those at least have a bit more info. In the 56 transmissions, serial numbers starting with A were used on 5622-42-62 models, B was on 5682-87 models, C was 5697-99 models and D was for 5647-67 models but no starting numbers or total ranges are given.

It would interesting to know why that particular breakdown. As far as I can determine, aside from Caribbeans with the C designation, valving was the same between Clippers and Packards with only the output flange being different. Another interesting question would be if the number stamped on the trans case also included the converter and if the entire trans was considered an assy.

The numbering scheme is a bit confusing. In 56 Packard appears to have slotted hardtops as more of a sporty offering so sedans used converters with different stall speeds than the hardtops. The B designation is used for both models so it would seem unlikely a converter is included yet with the A and D designations there are distinctions between Clipper sedans and hardtops which could include a converter.

LTRD, was your question meant to pertain only to the automatic transmissions?

Here's the rear of the case of a 1956 Caribbean Twin Ultra with Utica # C1107; the meaning of the 31579 and LGS remain unknown, to me at least. Anyone know what they indicate?

HH56, I have often wondered if there may be an error with the transmission code letters you noted. Note the flip-flop relative to the Utica engine codes, one would think Packard wanted the letters for both the engines and transmissions to correspond.

Kev, HH, OD,

Thanks for the replies.

OD,
Yes, all Packard transmissions.

The Ultramatic/Gear-Start/Twin is a good start.

BUT,

Standard as well.

Do the standard transmissions have identification stamping like the picture you posted OD?

What casting numbers identify the standard transmission?

Don't know about the numbers, but they are all 51-54 R11 overdrive transmissions. The one in the middle happens to have a bathtub straight stick slip yoke stuck in it. The other two are set for the normal 51-54 driveshaft with Spicer yokes. Bathtub versions of the same transmissions would be shorter and yokes that only rotate.

Ross,

Thank you

So really no changes on 51-51 standard/standard overdrive transmissions thru the years?

I will try and look for stamping on them.
Just thought it was interesting that there were at least 2 different casting numbers.

Is the casting date any good way to tell the year of an Ultramatic?

Nice crisp "trade mark Ultramatic " casting.

1950 or 1951 or 1952?

Looking from the outside, how can you tell if it is a gear start?

Note tag on dipstick, gear start only.

"Trade mark Ultramatic " still nice and crisp casting.

Having a heck of a time getting the torque converter back on the transmission, not sure why.
