31 rebuild heating issues

Good morning,
I just did a rebuild on my 833 standard 8, took it out for a test drive yesterday and it had no power and got very hot with in two miles.
My first thought was the cam and crank timing was off, but after removing the timing cover the car is in time as it should be.
Id be open to anyone's input regarding this issue.
Happy thanksgiving to everyone.
Barry

First thing id do is give her a Comp Test. That will give us a map to follow.

I would first suspect distributor timing and the condition of the points? Then perhaps check out the mixture screw on the carburetor to see if it is too lean?

Agree with Greenfield. Retarded ignition timing will kill your performance and generate massive amounts of heat. And yet those old low compression engines will hardly sound any different in that condition.
