I see that this car has been listed in the Owners Registry with the data provided. In the registry, the type is listed as 373. Could this be the body type? If so, the body is from a 745 and is a deluxe sport phaeton, not a custom phaeton. The serial number is a puzzle as it is for a 526/533 and is not consistent with the 140" wheelbase Dave measures, which would be for a 640. Too many inconsistencies.

The serial number would indicate that it is a third series twin-six.

Here is a rough drawing of the shaft and small cup. The cup should come off toward the center of the car.

Hank:

I had the same problem recently with my 640 Phaeton. The previous owner ran a later carb and had discarded the shaft. I was able to make one from a shaft of the right size and some bell crank fittings that I had laying around. A lot of grinding and some welding. Looks original. You will also need the bracket that goes on the rear of the manifold to support the end of the rod that is toward the back of the car. If you are missing that, I may have an extra.

Ed:

The Perrot assembly on your car has parts installed in the following order from the half sphere joint toward the middle of the car: First is a brass cup that acts as a shield to keep dirt out and to make the motion smooth. Next is a smaller cup with a flange on the side toward the middle of the car that the spring seats on. Next is the spring. Next is a retainer that fits over the end of the spring. Next is a circular clip that nestles in a recess in the inner end of the smaller cup and in a groove in the shaft. If you push the spring retainer toward the outside of the car, you will see the clip. Work the clip out of the groove and everything can then slip off over the shaft. The above also answers your question about whether there are two cups - yes there are. The brass one is readily available from the usual suppliers. The smaller should be relatively non-wearing. If you are missing one or both of the smaller cups, I may be able to supply them. If you find that the universal joint parts are worn, I may have some of those also.

Good luck.

Re: 1929 Generator

My parts book says that there were three generators used for the 626/633/640/645 models. They were the CD-777, CD-800 and CD-840. It mentions that the CD-800 differs from the CD-777 only in the cutout and cutout mounting. It doesn't say what the difference between the CD-840 is and the others. It shows that the field coil OD23111 was used for the 800 and 840, but is unclear on whether the same was used for the 777. There is a field coil shown as OD 22760, but not its application.

I have three generators, 2 CD-840s and one CD-678, which is shown as applying to 2nd, 3rd and 4th series cars. It used an OD22433 field coil.

I have looked locally for a shop that can rewind field coils to no avail. Don't want to cannibalize one of the generators unless absolutely necessary. Can you give me contact info for a shop that can do it?

Thanks,

Jim Wayman

Does anyone know of a source where I can get new field coils for a 1929 Packard Owen-Dyneto Generator.

Thanks,

I have been submitting some pre-war salesman's booklets to Kevin for inclusion in our library. When I finish with them, I am happy to send him other pre-war material from my collection. If there is anything specific that anyone would like to see in the library, please let me know. If I have it, I will get it submitted.
