Welcome to Packardinfo.

I think Kev said most of it. If it's in good enough shape to bring back to life then do so. 120 HP is plenty for sunday driving and will keep up with modern traffic.

If you drop a small block chev in it then what do you have...a Chevard or a Pacolet?

In the end it is your choice.

Good luck!!

Another email from Terry (Traumjaegercat)

Happy Easter holiday thanks for the reply. I've amazed myself by getting the info to you. The picture as you said is for the rear and I took it off because it was jammed but after a good clean up and some new oil it freed up a treat. The front ones do have a straight arm. The rest of the info I'm not to certain on. They are Lovejoy Delco's. The other difference is that they have tapered holes in the link fixings and when I took the car for it's MOT the links were picked up as needing attention. I feel that this system is a weak design and is the reason that I want to change them for the correct ones. I hope that this gives you some idea of the situation as it is an odd one.

The situation with "link fixings", which I think means the lever arms on the shocks, is a concern. However I'm sure a little bit of engineering would rectify that. Whether the shocks are the same I also don't know because of my inexperience with them. I'll check Wades for numbers and markings on them and post what I find after Easter. Could you check yours for numbers and markings and post those too?

Tom,

Thanks, any light you can shed on this will no doubt help.

And Dave,

Thanks too, if there is a difference can you give some further info as to what it might be? I think Wade may have a parts book but I'm not sure if he does.

G'day ilff618,
to PackardInfo. Please include your '39 in the Owner Registry together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it. Whether you rebuild the straight 8 or update with a later engine would you consider starting a Project Blog here and keeping us updated as it progresses?

Depending on the current condition of the car, and what your long term plans are for it will answer your questions.

If you want to restore it, then keep the original motor. If you want to maintain its value, then keep the original motor.

Now if the car is a "project", unrestorable, or would require to much money to restore vs. it's finished value or you don't intend on keeping it original, or you are looking for a hot-rod/street-rod and speed. Then the original motor probably isn't going to be what you want. These were luxury cars built for smooth dependable transportation. Not build for the drag-strip. The majority of the folks here are about maintaining the original drive train. Anyone can drop in a SBC, but then you are just like every other vintage car with a SBC transplant in it. Open the hood on that straight eight at a show, and people will come over as you have something unique, a piece of history.

Just my , change given.

I think this should do the trick! Just verify the terminals on the switch. The power hooks to the batt terminal on it. (Click on the diagram below for the larger, clearer version)

I can't answer that from experience since it's wildly unlikely that my Limo will ever have working hydraulic windows, but I believe your supposition is correct... both windows would rise.

If it has the original 282 straight eight in it, it should produce around 120 HP. I don't have a 282 so I'll let somebody else comment on reliability, ease of rebuild, etc. The vast majority of the Packard owners on this forum have not replaced the engine of their cars with an 'aftermarket updated engine'.

I have a trivial question...this schematic shows only one hose into each lift cylinder. I know the later systems used two (fluid in and fluid out). What would happen if two windows were halfway lowered and simultaneously the switch fer one was depressed--opening the solenoid and the other was raised--opening the solenoid and activating the pump. Would they both rise?
