Re: 359 Aluminum head milled

Eric Boyle
How much thickness did you have milled off from the head? I would imagine some slight grinding to the chamber will allow the head of the valve to clear. (keeping in mind thermal expansion!!) I'd try that before I went with two gaskets. You're inviting all kinds of trouble by trying two gaskets, IMHO.

Even though your engine is very dirty I think you will have a good result in the end. It is great to see the finished product and the v8 is a beautifull engine as well.

Lots of work still left for you! Keep at it!

359 Aluminum head milled

Just got my 359 Aluminum head back from the shop and found that one of my valves touched the top of chamber. It was milled and straighted. I cannot find a thicker gasket, can I use two gaskets to be safe and keep the compression down?

Isn't the oil breather tube on the early 120 engines on the rear of the block right behind the lifter covers, instead of on the lifter covers like the 356 and the later Packard straight eights?

Case in point, Mal's 120 engine, if you look closely at the very rear of the engine, you can see the hole in the block for the tube:

"Koalas do have a chlamydia problem ..."
Chlamydia????? Isn't that genital warts or some kind of STD???? I didn't know animals could get STD's. About 20% or Americans have an STD.

The number(C314883C) would indicate it is a 282 from a 120 model. The attached photo shows areas that will help identify the 356 engines. Hope this helps.

It doesn't seem to make the headlines that Toyota's sales were down more than GM's or Ford's for the last reporting period.

In the area I live we have all the major brand Japanese dealerships. The funny part of it all is for the Japanese cars and truck sold in this area that after about five or six years they just seem to fade away. You see more older GM, Ford, and Chrysler products on the road. To me what the Japanese auto makers build is no better than what is built by US car makers. Toyota pickup that were built in the late 80's and 90's are nothing but rust buckets in this area after they are five or six years old.

I fully agree with everything Rusty O\Toole said. I'll still give you 100 bucks for it and I'll pay for the smog check.

Is nothing sacred? I guess nothing over 50 years old is good enough to save for "progress". Next they'll be selling these:

Europe is full of buildings 500 years old, survived bombing during WWII,they are true monuments to the past. America is a young country, yet we bulldoze anything in the way of a new shopping mall. Can't we save some of these old buildings? Alot of these industrial buildings from the past get turned into lofts, businesses, & warehousing. I guess these buildings were to far gone. I think the detroit economic status kind of ends that possibility.

"The Packard plant on East Grand Boulevard in Detroit was designed by Albert Kahn, and included the first use of reinforced concrete for industrial construction in Detroit. When opened in 1903, it was considered the most modern automobile manufacturing facility in the world. The plant closed in 1957 ( although parts of it are still rented out ). The plant complex covers 35 acres ( 3.5 Million Square feet )"

I guess I won't be seeing the packard building after all

Mr PB,

Clicked into the link provided and after reading about the Packard plant sale noticed one of the other items on the link was about a koala hit by a car and surviving. Koalas do get hit by cars and most would not survive, so my interest was piqued. Reading the story and viewing the pic it seemed obvious this was a beat up, so I hope the Packard plant one was too.

PS - Koalas do have a chlamydia problem and it seems this is a greater threat to them than getting hit by cars!
