My Color Choice
Home away from home
Home away from home

Tom (Packin31)
I was looking for a deep rich color beside the normal Maroons and this one caught my eye when I saw it on a car in the shop. We will see how it looks. I should be receiving my order in a few days.

Allen Kahl
Thanks guys:

That will certainly be information that I will be able to use in the future. I will at least be able to properly present the engine to prospective buyers.

WD sorry this did not work out for you hope you find one.

Thanks again.

The number(C314883C) would indicate it is a 282 from a 120 model. The attached photo shows areas that will help identify the 356 engines. Hope this helps.

That would certainly explain the early '39 build date also. The 1940 356 engine numbers will be in the C500051-507697 in the Super Eight 160 models range or CC500000-503000 if in a 180 models according to Dr. Marvin.

Chlamydia????? Isn't that genital warts or some kind of STD???? I didn't know animals could get STD's. About 20% or Americans have an STD.

V8,

It is an STD and apparently it is devastating for Koalas. So much so that considerable research is being done to find a cure for this Koala Kalamity. I think the % for Koalas is way north of 20%.

Ron,

I believe that Kev has already bid and won, as the pic attests. He said it was taken in Detroit, but we know better!

Didn't expect to get to the workshop today because I had some other matters to attend to. These included going to a large Harley Davidson dealer at Homebush about 8 miles from home. Reason for going to the Harley dealer was twofold 1) to purchase silicon brake fluid, and 2) to purchase some turn indicators for the '41 and for Wade's '34. The story with the Harley indicators is that many of the Harleys imported into Australia have the turn indicators replaced with a different style after arrival. So the many replaced indicators, not being required, are sold cheaply. The Harley dealers side of the story was somewhat different, being that there are basically 3 styles of indicators on the bikes imported to Australia and NONE of these are replaced after they arrive. Of course I could have bought genuine Harley indicators through their spare parts dept @ AU$95 each and AU$60 each for the mounting stalk but I declined their offer. Did buy the silicon fluid though as Wade recommends it and has been running it in his '37 120 for the past 17 years without an ounce of trouble. After the Harley dealer I went to the speed equipment shop next door and found turn indicators there for AU$22 each! Certainly not as nice as the Harleys but nice enough and 4 indicators for less than the price of one Harley indicator. Haven't acted on these yet as Wade is going to contact the guy who told him the Harley indicator story first.

Cleared my other matters sooner than expected so arrived at the workshop early afternoon and started cleaning up the excess POR-15 from the right side front suspension parts to be re-installed. Wade arrived just in time to apply some brute force to the right side torque arm bracket. This was done using a large crescent wrench then a large hammer resulting in the re-alignment of the bracket and allowing the shouldered pin to fit and seat properly. Next was the re-installation of all the suspension components with similar problems encountered in aligning the lower support arm bolts in the front cross member and getting the spring compressed.

In my travels today saw a couple of interesting cars first a Simca, French car, and a 33/34 Ford Coupe with a chopped top , pic's attached.

Re: 359 Aluminum head milled

G'day all, You don't say whether you had a head gasket fitted when you determined that the valve was touching the head. If you didn't have a head gasket on you need to measure the interference with and without a head gasket fitted (loose not tensioned). You also need to grease-up the valve tops and determine which one is touching the head. I would not recommend two head gaskets. There are firms around which profile cut all manner of materials with water. If it fouls without a head gasket and does not foul with one you may need only a few thou to clear during operation. I would have a solid copper gasket made to a yet to be determined thickness dimension. It may cost you a few hundred dollars but it should last. My 54 Caribbean head was very eroded and warped but it was welded, milled etc and came up fine. Get a few more opinions before you decide on a plan of action. best regards Peter Toet

If I had the money,..... the front door to my house would get a considerable "upgrade"! I honestly hope it goes to a Packard museum to be their front door instead of going to some rich a$$hole to put in their private home so no one could see it.

How much thickness did you have milled off from the head? I would imagine some slight grinding to the chamber will allow the head of the valve to clear. (keeping in mind thermal expansion!!) I'd try that before I went with two gaskets. You're inviting all kinds of trouble by trying two gaskets, IMHO.

Even though your engine is very dirty I think you will have a good result in the end. It is great to see the finished product and the v8 is a beautifull engine as well.

Lots of work still left for you! Keep at it!
