David, interesting about adding a little diesel to the gas mix. Do you have a measurement ratio for that? I have not heard of using the wooden pins? Would you put some in the tank? If I remember right Max Merritt sells heat shields for the fuel pumps.

Thanks
Jason

I was in that position as well, had to load down the front with sand bags and put stands along the frame just in case she fell. Becarful with using the jack if the frame is not high enough the spring will come down and pin the jack to the floor.

Also if you try to get it out by lowering and pulling or hammering the spring out that is a bad idea, saw one shoot out at an angle and go through the garage wall, so don't stand in front of it.

Hope it helps, be careful.

Thanks Owen, I will look at that.

Another question, is in the transmission department the manual says to fill the tranny and to run the engine in gear at 800rpm for two minutes to fill the torque converter. I know they are the guys that built the drive line but I would think that you might want some amount of fluid in the converter before the tranny pushed the fluid into the converter, or am I just nuking this.

rear brake drum rivets

I've almost got the rear end finished except for the rivets for the rear brake drums were cut off by some previous owner.

Does anyone know of a die company or some other person to help with making the rivets with a pneumatic hammer or shop press. I have the 3/8" rivet material but the dies to form the rivets I cannot find, my last resort would be is to go to a machine shop and have them use a lathe.

Any thoughts would help.

Thanks,
Jason

wiring harness

Hello all,

Working on finding a good company to make a wiring harness. I've come across "YnZ yesterdays parts", "Narragansett reproductions" and "Harnesses Unlimited" the folks that I have talked to at the companys said they make everything by hand and the harnesses are to factory spec's (they said they have the schematics for colors and connections).

Has anyone dealt with any of these guys and are they as good as they sound? Or is there another company that anyone has used and is happy with the work?

Thanks,
Jason

The guys at Kanter and Max Merritt didn't have the rivet. One of the first people I called. I do like the shoulder screw and nut idea.

Thanks for your help.

The rivet connects the control valve link to the inner lever. Dont know how much pressure is on the rivet but I'll look into the shoulder screw. I havent found a Packard part number for the rivet.
Thanks for the information. Jason

Ultramatic rivet

Have just finished rebuilding the 23rd series ultramatic off of a 1950 Packard. I forgot to find another rivet when I ground out the old rivet, now the only folks that I've talked to that might have the right rivet are the aerospace rivet makers that sell them in bulk.

I'm probable not seeing it but does anyone know of a place to find the shoulder rivet for the ultramatic?

Thanks for the help,
Jason

otgdy,

If you need new wiper blades (Classic 33-111 for a 1950 Packard DeLuxe 8) Advanced Auto (SKU # 5070414)has them for $16.55 with tax. They look the same as the original. I don't know if you can return stuff from ebay though.

Hope it helps,
Jason
