Can't recall observing an entirely original and unmolested 39 Super 8 engine but based on the same engine from 29 thru 37,
Crankcase and oil pan castings are natural aluminum. cam roller housings are natural aluminum. Oil cooler is green Oil cooler lines are nickel-plated. Intake manifold drain tube is nickel-plated. Fuel pump is natural die cast. Some conflicting views on the vibration damper, either black or aluminum-painted. There is some difference of opinion on the L8 oil filter, the original factory installation may have been green but Purolater replacements were black. There are some folks on here who have done excellent restorations of 38 and 39 Super 8s who may have better info.

The roller tappet castings are cast iron.
I could paint them Aluminium. I saw an engine picture in Wades Workshop and it was green.

Saw that too, but they should be painted with aluminum. Yes you're right and my memory lapse, they are indeed cast iron.

Sorry, Don't want to lead anyone astray. Maybe I should quit posting pic's from the workshop? I've been shot down in flames a number of times so a better way would be to describe many of the pic's as - close, but not quite.

The workshop and especially the pictures are wonderful. No criticism intended.

While we are on the subject of the Vibration Dampener.
There is only a verrrrry faint scribe line for TDC. How did Packard install the timing marks. Was it a stencil or a decal or hand painted. A very bad painting many yeas ago totally hid what was there. It is easy to calculate the distance for say a 5 deg and 10 degree mark by measuring the diameter and then calculating the circumference. How should I put on these marks and what do they look like?
