On some canisters, there's an embossed INLET and OUTLET designating correct setup.

Joe, inlet and outlet markings on the Purolator L-8 filters doesn't help much as they are entirely symmetrical end for end. Easiest way IMO to determine oil flow is to just tickle the starter motor a few times and note the direction of flow.
Just guessing, the oil line assembly is from a 1935-39 senior 8-cylinder?

Here is a bit on the flow from the 36-7 SM and has virtually the same wording in the 38-9 manual.
