Production dates for the 5th Series Single Six are generally given as 7-1-27 to 8-1-28 so the car could have been titled as either a 1927 or 1928. If indeed the seller is sure the date of first registration was January 2, it couldn't have been in 1927.

Gushca..I am well versed on the 1928 packard sixes. I have two. a 526 sedan and a 526 coupe.

Im gonna ask for some numbers in various locations

1) lift hood or bonnet and give me the frame number stamped onto the frame. It will be on the left hand side.

2} Engine number it will be stamped by the oil filler ledge
it begins with a Star...then the number..ending in a star. again on the left hand side.

3) look at the steering gear housing on top..again there is a number stamped on it..you may have to to use a degreaser and or some fine steel wool

4) there is also a number on the transmission. you will have to lift up the floor board to see it. Its right in front of the cover plate stamped onto the housing. You may have to again use some steel wool to lightly remove grease and smudge.

5)Open up the rear right door and lift the carpet up a bit. There should be a brass body tag about 4 inches in nailed to the floor. If it is a 1928 the number will start with 303-...the 303 tells you it is a 5 passenger sedan, the same as mine. My coupe begins with 308- which tells me it is a 1928 Rumble seat coupe.

The 1928 model was introduced in August of 1927 thru July of 1928...

Analyisis shows that about 80 % of the production of the 526 series 6 cyc were sedans, the balance being the roadster,phaeton, coupe and convertible coupe.

Please note..all of the numbers DO NOT match but are in close proximity to one another.

Engines for 1928 6 cyc will start with 125013 thru 166770
both for all models of the 6 cyclinder which includes the longer wheel base 533.

Be sure to include any info on the data plate if you have it on the dash.

a few other observances

the 526 had eight lug wheels whereas the 426 for 1927 had 6 or 7 lugs.

Unique intrument panel for 1928..they were all set in a cluster surrounded by an immitation leatherette with a fancy bezel.

If you have an early 526 it may have parabeam headlights ..look at the top of the headlight housing to see if it says CM Hall parabeam. Also the parabeam will have two adjusting screws in back of the base body of the headlight...later in the year Packard went to 'depress beam' also marked on top of the headlight by CM Hall only this time only one adjusting screw on housing.

major options for 1928 would have been dual sidemounts, the motor meter with the Godess of Speed, and side cowl lamps.

There are other tell tale signs whether your car is an early or late model 526.

1) Earlier models had a hard maple steering wheel as opposed to the later hard rubber on the 28.29'and 30 models

2)Earlier models had the choke and throttle knobs above the insturment panel on the riser by the windscreen or windshield . later models had the choke and throttle in the intrument panel themselves.

I have a repo print of the accessory items available on the 526 and earlier models...

In addition. I see you are from Germany..a few months ago, I sold my 52/533 brochure in German to some guy in Germany. I will look his name up and see who it is for you...Its a full color brochure like the US version only in German.

Paint schemes. Forgive me but I'm somewhat of a 'purist' and technically the 526 your friend has is incorrect somewhat on paint scheme.

Yes we have heard from various enthusiasts that Packards could be painted any color one desired. The answer to that is yes and no.

My Salesman's data book makes the point clear.

Quote:
The cars must be brought through production in the exact color combinations given. If distributors require any changes, they should arrange to do this locally."

Basically for the sedan here are the color combinations.
In all cases the fenders were black along with the splash aprons.

These are the color combo's for the 5-26 Sedan 8 total 5-26 Sedans

A) Black upper, Main body and wheels and reveals Westminster grey
stripes Coronado Tan on wheels and body.

B)Black upper, main body and wheels and reveals Packard Blue,stripes gold on body and wheels


D)Black upper, main body and wheels, Sheffield Green, window reaveals Baskt Green, stripes on body and wheels Pistache Green


EA) Highland Green upper, main body, wheels and reveals, Sagebrush Green Light, Stripes and wheels, Peewee Green

F) Black upper, main body and wheels,reveals, Algerian Blue, stripes on body and wheels, Flake White

KB) upper body Corpa Drab, lower body, wheels and reveals Chicle Drab
stripe on body and wheels Casino Red.

N)upper body Killarney Gray, main body, reveals,and wheels Dundee Grey, stripe Flake white
window reveals

and additional color was added later in the year

XB entire car black, window reveals and wheels Baskt green

I also have the stripe positions avail. there were some vairations on the above schemes.

On color schemes in particular XB.

When I got my 526 2/4 coupe from California in '82 I noticed in hidden places there were remanents of the car being painted Black. The car when received had been painted a black primer and the wheels a grey primer. When I removed one of the wheels I carefully removed the primer and what was exposed was the green wheel in accordance with scheme XB but yet at the time, it was not listed as a color combo in the Salesmans Data book for 1928. When I removed the rumble seat back spring, there marked in chalk from the body shop was etched XB-308..the paint scheme plus 308 for the body code. When attending Hershey some years later, one of the literature vendors had a 1929 Salesmans Data book. Lo and behold..there was paint scheme XB for the 626. so evidently it was introduced in 1928 and carried over to the 6th sereis.

the exact description of XB is as follows:

Entire car Black
Window reveals
LOWER MOULDING
and wheels Baskt Green

Stripe, standard position and
size below the upper moulding
and on wheels, also on 1/8" stripe
through center of moulding Straw

Upholstery Standard broadcloth
Where leather is used in Staionary
coupe and Convertible Coupes
colonial grain # 713

colonial grain # 713 is Green. This is also confirmed by remants in my coupe where the leather was green and along with green leatherette on golf club door and also on the kick panels in th passenger compartment. In addition the floor linoleum is also green. The broadcloth is grey with a bluish/green flour d' lil pattern. and the door panes are solid. Carpet in the rumble seat are is a grey hogshair square weave pattern.

Also note that many folks when painting the wheels do it incorrectly. Where the lugs go thru the wheelm that area should be black..Ive seen this error time and time again not only on the 5th series but on folks who have 6,7,8 and 9th series cars. Examination of factory photo's will show this as being correct, however thats not to say it wasn't done at the local level as described earlier or perhaps by the custom body builders.

Thanks for the photo, that's a type of plate I've seen before in other languages but not in German.

My 1939 list gives only a single distributor in Germany, as follows (type a bit muddled and not easy to read):
