Working on a 1940 super 8 with a 356. Unsure that what i removed for oil galley plugs are correct. What should this engine have for oil galley plugs and what size? I had 3/8 pipe plugs in the front and rear, and the cam galley had plugs behind the front cover with brass tangs which i imagine are for metering oil to th gears. What should i be installing? i had a rear galley that had 2 3/8 plugs stacked one behind the other which is why i am unsure as to what is correct. some help would be appreciated.

The passage plugs should be 3/8 countersunk headless pipe plugs. Quantity was listed as X (or not specified) on 40 engines but the same engine in 48-50 lists 4 for oil passage, rear. The lifter gallery should have a jiggle pin setup at each end in 40-41 which was changed to a different type valve for 42 and later. Here is an illustration and writeup on the 40 setup.

ok, the jiggle pin was in my front lifter galley, unsure on rear though. i removed 3 pipe 3/8 npt from the rear. one was behind the jiggle pin plug, and 2 were in the other galley. now my next question is where can i buy these jiggle pin galley plugs? are any suplliers selling them? If not what are guys doing for rebuilds?

You might give Kanter Auto a callkanter.com/packard/ . If anyone would have it, it would probably be them and sometimes miracles happen. If the valves are not available someone else will have to give you the options.

Here is the last couple of paragraphs of that article showing the difference on later engines and giving the part number. The 1940 engine would be the 18th series item.
