Has anyone found a good substitute for the rectangular bumpers used on the the underside back edge of the trunk on the 51-54 (55-56?) models?
The are held on with a screw are about 1/4" - 1/3" thick or so.

Kev - I made some for my 51 using rubber sheet stock and some large punches. Let me know what size you need and I may be able to help you out.

This is what they looked like on my car. The other one just crumbled.

Can't find my Steele rubbber box this evening? I'll look again in the morning.

Don't know if you have a Grainger store near you, but they have 12"x12" sheets of rubber in varying thickness. If they do not have it in stock, they can have it for you the next day.

JW, that's good to know! Perhaps if nothing else shakes out, I will go and buy a sheet and make up a bunch of them. Should be easy to make.

Anybody have a pic of where the bumpers go? I think they were long gone on my clipper and might want to put them back.

They go on the bottom of the trunk lid, where the lid would contact the lip on the bottom of the trunk floor when closed. You should see a small screw hole on each side, that is where they attach. Basically they keep the lid from smashing into that lip and jacking up the paint.
You can see one in the upper left hand corner of this picture. Black rectangle. They were actually painted over at the factory.

FYI, for those who wish to spend money instead of making their own, 55-6 used the same 444051 item and Steele has them -- complete with metal core and screw according to the description.
