Would love the radio it may be useful for parts if it beat up to bad. As for the shaft the part #347577. It is the part that the free wheeling clutch mates to.
Let me know how much you want for the radio and if you have the shaft. I found a place in Ohio that I am going to get the overdrive and trans rebuilt. Thought that since I had it out I would get it done by a professional. They are also looking for an R11 as it was the better overdrive unit. But in the meantime all I have is the R9-1 so will repair that one unless an R11 becomes available. Thanks Philip Griffin

Philip, keep in mind that if you switch to the R11, you'll also need the different wiring and electrical components.

Perhaps a last resort but you old shaft could be remetalized and ground and polished back to original dimensions and surface finish.

One question always leads to another. What exactly is the difference between the wiring with an R9 and an R11?
North West Transmission mentioned that they may be able to repair the shaft in their machine shop. But do you know any shops that can re-metal and then case harden the race? Would also like to take this opportunity to thank Brian DeBoeck for the 4 gear pinion. Thanks Philip

Easiest would be to compare schematics. The R11 is much simpler and is definitely disabled when ign sw is off. R9 is powered all the time and issues in wiring to the governor can energize things when unattended.
Additionally, there is no indicator light or circuit on the R11 to let the operator know when ready for OD. A single relay is brought in by the governor and energizes the solenoid. R11 solenoid only has one terminal to energize as both coils are internally connected whereas the R9 has two separate coils in solenoid each with its own power. There is a second relay whose contacts are in the ign cutout circuit. Its coil is in series with one of the solenoid coils so proper operation depends on the correct resistance of the coils in series. In the R11, Ign cutout is essentially only controlled by solenoid contact and goes thru a switch for the positive quick disconnect. The R9 has the solenoid contact and two relay contacts which have to engage or drop out in sequence to ensure the ign cutoff is not lasting too long. The only electrical components that are the same for both units is the lockout switch and governor. The R11 kickdown sw can be used on the R9 but not vice versa. The common R11 electrical components which were the same as used by other mfgs are being repro'd. Governor and lockout switch was Packard only and not sure the repro solenoid plunger length is appropriate for Packard but maybe could be used.

No, but the ones I've heard of that do this work first grind a little undersize and then plate oversize with hard chrome before final finishing so case-hardening shouldn't be necessary.

Also if you upgrade from the R9 to the R11, checkout the manual on this web site. I will post something to look into, since my 47 has the R11 installed and I can not use reverse without disengaging the overdrive.
