wheel cylinder x fit

There is nothing listed here or on Craigs site that I see for pre 51 wheel cylinders 1" front and 15/16 rear. Has anyone found a replacement for these from a later car. Believe I heard at one time there was a Jeep or some such with same but memory is fading. Kanter lists them but seems like these might still be available at regular store.

Has anyone converted a 46-7 to later larger cylinders and what would be involved. Assume the holes in backing plate might be different but anything else?

Here's half an answer, maybe no answer.

A parts clerk found some Wheel Cylinders for me from BrakeBest, a distributor out of Springfield MO. One was the 1" and the other 15/16". Their numbers were WC18985 and WC18984 (Don't remember which was which size.)

HOWEVER, the fitting in the back of the cylinder for the flexible line didn't match up for my flex lines (either the old or new ones). I think the diameter was too small. SO...

I did use parts from the cylinders to rebuild my old cylinders. They were only about $12, so with time, labor s&h, and trips to parts stores, I considered them 'rebuild kits." I didn't try to find flex lines or adapters to make them work, and went on to the next repair.

I don't know what modern cars these units were made to fit, but was bummed about the line fitting problem.

Sorry, this is only a lead and not a fix!

I wouldn't have went to that much trouble, they sell brake line adapters in steel.

ParPack, thanks for that info. Will see if those numbers & adapters Eric mentioned available somewhere locally but if anyone has a number for no mod items, would appreciate it as well.

I believe the 15/16 also fit a Ford. I found some some years ago.

What year and model? There are different sizes for different models.

47 - 2106. Specs say 1"front, 15/16 rear.

Have found some at decent price but fitting size is the biggest issue. 3/8x24 instead of 7/16x20. Same issue ParPack ran into. Was hoping someone had done this before and found the proper stuff locally we could put in x-ref instead of having to go thru vendors.

Will be changing hoses & lines so not a big deal except for future if someone goes by book. ParPacks numbers cross over except the fronts indicate they cross to several including larger sizes -- 1 1/16 & 1 1/8. Need to verify that part.

Thinking of going with larger except the mounting holes & spacing on backing plate will probably be an issue. Has anyone used a larger front cylinder on their cars?

Just wondering, are the OEM repros so exorbitantly priced that we're looking for lower cost alternatives? Seem to recall that the repro wheel cylinders I bought for the 56 were only about $23 each, from Argentina I think. I didn't think that was a bad price, certainly only a bit more than than kits to rebuild the existing ones.

I think I can find the OEM Wagner-Lockheed part numbers if that would help any.

Yes, I have used the later 1-1/8" cylinders for the front brakes on my 22nd Series Custom 8 (Old mechanics trick for better stopping) It was done by drilling the 3/8-24 to a larger size and tapping for 7/16-20 to match the threads on the brake hoses.

The openings in the backing plates are the same for the original and the newer cylinders.

I bought all the wheel cylinders for my '54 from Napa. They had them in stock. I think the price was between $15-$20. All standard Wagner part numbers.

I could not find the original Wagner part numbers for the per-1951 wheel cylinders, but did find the numbers for the repair kits. Once I had those I was able to cross reference them to the Brakeware part number using the Autozone website. If you can find the original Wagner P/N for the W/C's, then try searching that at Autozone to see if it will cross to the BrakeWare W/C. Anyway here are the repair kit part numbers for future reference. Hopefully this may help you.
