I don't have a manifold off to look inside, so can someone tell me which direction is open & closed on the heat riser, looking from the rear (counterweight side) for a '48 Packard Custom 356ci?

As the heat relaxes the thermostatic spring the counterweight overcomes the spring action, so the valve is OPEN when the counterweight is in the down position.
