What are you guys all using as far as a jack in the event of a flat tire? I won't use the factory bumper jack other than as a display piece in the trunk. But I am looking for something compact and usefully, but not at unwieldy as my 3-ton floor jack.

Perhaps a jack from a late model pickup or something?

I have a small floor jack that stows behind my spare tire. It is pictured somewhere in our archives. I adapted it to fit the frame on the side. It came from a 1984 Chevy

In the 34 the factory axle jack is more than adequate but in the 56 I carry a small rolling 2-ton hydraulic jack.

I guess a question is generally how much vertical lift distance is needed on the 51-56 bodies to change a tire?

I see this one at my local parts store. Rated to 4000lbs:

Good question Kev. In the front of the 56 I place the jack under the lower A-frame so only 1 inch of lift is needed. In the rear I remove the skirt and place the jack under the frame ahead of the wheel rather than under the axle. I'd guess about 8 inches of lift is needed.

If you jack up under the rear axle, even with the skirt removed, I doubt you can remove the tire/wheel. You almost
Have to jack up the frame on a 51-56 Packard.

I've actually had the wheels on and off on the back with the axle resting on jack stands. But then again I am only running 215 75 R15 tires.
