I was sent a pic of a 1949 Packard data plate that reads:

2279-1036
Paint scheme 2440
Trim code 214-215

Looks to me as if someone got a blank data plate and then proceeded to put the wrong data on it.

The serial number started at 2001.

I was under the impression that Packard used the alpha code for the paint color ('P' for Grenadier Maroon not 2440 which is the numeric code).

The trim shows what is apparently the first two options for a 2279 as listed in the Parts Manual.

If the car is really a 1949 22nd series, then the number should read 2279-9-xxxx.

I would seriously doubt that the plate is original.

The first two digits designate the series; a 22XX is a 22nd series, 23XX is a 23rd series.

22XX = 1948 (22nd series)
22XX-9 = 1949 (22nd series)
23XX = 1949 (23rd series)
23XX-5 = 1950 (23rd series)
