Packard just called it fabric in the 25th series factbook so I imagine 51 was probably called the same.

In the Intro section of parts manual starting on page XVII they called it cloth and then when describing the colors broke it down to broadcloth, bedford cord, and matelasse. I believe each of those can be wool or cotton although I think Packard used mostly wool -- at least for the broadcloth. Not sure on the others but I believe they stuck with better quality materials even with the inexpensive models.

Matelesse was nylon or a similar synethetic fiber.

I was looking at SMS fabrics online, they say they can send samples for your car, but they want to know if it is cloth, wool or vinyl.....

depends on whether you're wanting to restore the car to it's exact original glory, otherwise look at the LeBaron Bonney website. They have all the patterns, but not the original type of fabrics.

this is where the stuff in the Kanter catalog comes from.

I think the original seat, sidewalls and headliner fabrics were all wool, judging by what was left in my car.

My 51 200 sedan had a striped brownish and gray broadcloth, which was wool. If you look at the "Packard's the one for 51"brochure, scroll down to the artwork on the 200 - you can see the stripes, albeit somewhat pixelated.
