I believe group # 5.1718 might be the piece you ask about. It is referenced in the 41-7 Clipper parts book but not in the 35-41 or the 48-54 that I could find so will have to have expert opinion if it was used on all 356. Found no reference to anything at rear other than the parts book lists quantity 2 on all components

Some more information from Vol 20 #1 service counselor. Haven't found anything about the 48-50 engines other than the piston doesn't appear to be listed, so unknown what used..

There was a change with the 22nd Series 356 engines. I knew I read it somewhere... Oh yeah, I read it here in the Packard Articles section.
It was in both the Service Counselor Vol 21 #13 and the 1948 Service Manual Section 5 page 35.

Thanks for the help guys.
Our block was cast in 1939, so I am going to assume that it does not have the oil supply hole tapped as in the 22nd series and later engines to supply oil to the No. 1 and No. 8 camshaft bearings. Looks like our choices are to either find the oil regulation valve that our block is missing, or alternatively to tap the holes which were apparently drilled in the 22nd and later series engines to supply oil to No. 1 and No. 8 camshaft bearings. Does anyone know where we could buy the oil regulation valves? As I stated, Kanter had no idea of what we were talking about. Alternatively, can someone look at a 22nd or later 356 block and describe exactly where the oil supply holes were drilled and their diameter? Again, thanks for the help. Walt

Sorry, both my 356 engines are fully assembled at the moment. I suspect (based on the engine plate from the 48-54 parts manual below) that the hole was drilled through the bottom of the chamber that once held the problematic valve. I am clueless as to the diameter. Armed with the group number, part numbers and plate provided by HH56, I think I'd go back to Kanter, Max, or other vendor and see what they can come up with.

JD's suggestion would be a good start to see if vendors could help once they know what to look for. Only problem is those individual piece numbers above are for the 20-21 series and the counselor article says those won't retrofit to earlier engines. I believe in an earlier post you had a 40?? you were working on. Maybe the part number given as an assembly for the earlier engines can be found.
