Electrical Connections on Overdrive Unit

1954 Convertible w/ 3-speed + OD (I do not know which “R” version it is.)

During the removal of the engine and transmission for overhaul, I was not present for pics to be taken of the wiring connections on the overdrive unit itself, therefore, I have some questions. There is no issue with which wires connect to the solenoid.

1. The wire schematic shows only one wire from the governor, but there are 2 wires. What does one do with the extra wire and which wire is connected to the lock-out switch? The wires on the governor are the same color. One is not yellow as alluded to on the wire diagram.

2. Once determined which wire is used, does it matter which terminal on the lock-out switch the governor wire is connected?

3. Does it matter which terminal wire #44 is connected on the lock-out switch. I cannot see any ref. designators on the switch.

Thanks for your input!

You have the R11 overdrive.

The governor apparently has the back used prior to 51. The wire used for overdrive is connected to the exposed terminal that is sort of in the middle of the back near an edge. That wire gets grounded when the car reaches OD cut in speed. The extra wire that comes out of the protruding or hollow area which may be filled with tar is for the discontinued by 51 Electromatic Clutch. It is grounded until speed is reached at which time it opens. Just tuck it out of the way.

The lockout switch is just a regular switch that when OD is locked out opens to interrupt the ground coming from the governor so the relay can not pull in. It does not matter which terminal you use to connect to wire 44.

BigKev: Sorry for the duplicate entry! Website said I’d timed out when I submitted, so I submitted again thinking only one had gone through!

Is there a version of the diagram around with the wire colors marked?

Not a factory drawing showing how the wires relate to the internal items and contacts inside the components. That drawing was taken from a service article describing the new 22nd series R11 operation and was modified to show how the lockout switch location in the circuit was changed for 51-4.

Here is the standard factory wire in-wire out "bird's eye view" approach with a bit showing the actual wire size and colors added.

Thank you! I knew I had seen one somewhere but didn’t think to check the obvious.
