There are many variations within the 4GC family of carburetors depending on the make of vehicle and particular engine requirements. Which particular 4GC you have is indicated by the number on the triangular brass tag held by one of the cover screws; for your '56 400 I believe the correct number is 7008610 and is different than either of the two 4GCs used on the Caribbeans, also different than the several 4CGs used in 1955.
IMO the best kits are those from Daytona Parts in Florida. A single kit can service a wide range of individual carburetor numbers.

Thanks for that.
I just took another look at the carb and it says 4 Jet on the top I changed my posting to reflect this.. I have done some reading and search for kits... I found no tag or numbers on my carb... I'll look at Daytona best

A "4 JET" cast into the top cover is consistent with a Rochester 4GC.
You might go here for more info on the 4GC: thecarburetorshop.com/Carburetor_ID_Rochester_4G.htm

thanks all. got if all worked out now... no tag on the Carb
but there is a small stamping So just need to bleed the brakes and my 56 is back on the road.. I did a lot of reading on the 4GC today, checked out all the rebuild kits... prices range from $48 to $75.. I remember a couple years ago I checked with NAPA about a rebuild kit, price was $35, Today I looked I could not find a listing for a rebuild kit... I'll check with Dave tomorrow at NAPA and see... Need to tighten up the gear selector little sloppy Will need new exhaust Going to feel great to have her back on the road... and I found my case of Purolator oil filters... I bought those way back in the late 80's for $2.00 each... Thanks again all

I would recommend that you not use those 30-year old filters. Too big a chance they will come apart and plug up you engine. Buy a new one from NAPA and sell the old ones for garage art. Oil filters are not expensive and there is no need to take a chance on expensive engine repairs with these old filters. Also, I recommend Daytona for your carburetor overhaul kit. Quality parts and everything you will need plus a comprehensive instruction sheet. Others are not comprable, but are comparable. JWL

have not decided on who to buy a kit from... It's one of those
items you hope you don't "need" to buy a second time soon. I'm sure the 4GC kits from the other sellers are good.. I just want to know what parts are in the kit... I have faith in my old filters,, If I'm wrong... oh well

We have been selling filters for 50+ years and many of them are 50+ years old AND we use them on our own cars.. Aged pistons, bearings, head gaskets, seals etc are what many of our customers get when they buy from us and we have never gotten a return for failure on an aged part.
Think of it, your motor oil and gas are millions of years old

Fred, your experiences not withstanding I'll side with JW on this one. I've only seen it once, a lovely engine turned to junk by a disintergrated oil filter with the paper mush plugging various oil passages. Only once, but it if happens to you, once is once too often. In my mind, not worth the risk.
