Are the Twin Traction axles lubricated by the differential gear oil or do the axle ends have packed bearings?

Thanks!

Neither, if by "packed" you mean serviceable as in Packards 1955 and earlier. Axle ends for 1956, Twin Traction and conventional, Packard and Clipper, have permanently lubricated and sealed bearings. The 1956 units were outsourced to Dana, 1955 was the last of the Packard designed and built units.

As Owen said, they are sealed bearings and the grease sealed inside was refined while Eisenhower was president. It has turned to something a bit like ear wax on a winters day so if you are doing a major service on the car I recommend new bearings. They are easy to come by as they were used on all manner of Ford products from '49 up.

Gentlemen thank you as always. I just rebuilt the rear brakes and had a thought the bearings could use a refresh. My Twin Traction axles have the paint stripe so hopefully they have been replaced at least once. Ross do you have a Ford part number I could take down to my local NAPA store?

Brakes are done and the bearings will be a future project.

All the best and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

P/N 88128R. When ordering make sure it includes both the bearing itself and the locking ring. Lot's of no-name cheap crap out there, I suggest buying a quality name brand.

Many thanks Dave. Completely agree of all the poor quality parts out there. Fix it once and fix it right!

Highly recommend you take your axles to a competent shop to have the new bearings installed. The job takes a big press and a knowledgeable mechanic to do the job right.
