Old school starter and alternator shop....FOUND!

So I have ridden past this building that has two full walls proclaiming "starters and alternators" on it and finally stopped in today. I brought in the starter of of my 2300 series '49 Packard, the guy at the counter (mid 30's like me) takes one look at it and says "that's an OLD one" I tell him what it came off of and he tells me, "let me get my dad out of the back" So not 30 seconds later here comes who I guessed was his dad with a freakin' Packard starter! It was the other one that came on them that has a clutch lever thingy instead of a silonoid, but it looked 90% like mine and looked NEW. So we get talking and he tells me how HIS dad started the business in 1952 in of all places, an old Packard dealership and how the only cool Packard swag that they found was a can of Packard antifreeze that they gave to a lawyer friend (now a local judge) who owns a Packard and how to this day it sits on his desk. I left feeling that my starter has landed at the right place.

I found a place here in Portland, OR and had them rebuild the starter for my '51 200 Deluxe. The starter came back looking brand new and worked like it too. If I remember right the bill came to $125.00. The turn around was pretty fast as well (about 2 or 3 days.
The Shop is called:

Philbin Rebuilt Products
28 N. Russell Street
Portland, OR, 97227-1619
1-800-869-7301
www.philbingroup.com

Good Luck.

Mite try Dickson Rebuilders in Dickson Tennessee. I've had good luck with them on starters and alternators and generators when armatures are bad or other dificult problems that go beyond standard rebuilding. Affordable prices too. 113 Sylvis streest. Dickson Tn. 615 446 2284 from the yellow pages. I have to use them about once every 3 years or so.

Another shop that's terrific in the Chicago area is MG Auto Electric in Arlington Heights:

Telephone
847-394-1698
FAX
847-637-1199
Postal address
500 S. Arthur Avenue
Electronic mail
General Information: mg@cyrusnet.com

They do first class work with excellent turnaround times and can do wonders with generators, alternators and starters from anything. Reasonable, very fair and helpful. Ask for Larry

Did my 56 starter and were very helpful straightening out wiring on my alternator.

Indeed it is! And yes they are. But not as good as another in the area called the Tropicana. The owner there has been doing ribs since 1957 (she's 89 and still does all the cooking and runs the place)
