1937 Six, 12 volt conversion - Which coil?

37 packard converted from 6 to 12 volts.

Runs with original 6 volt coil however, coil gets very hot!

Should I
use a 12 volt coil?

Most coils are rated at 6-8v and running at 12v, at the least you should have a ballast resistor in the wire between the ign sw and the coil. That should drop the voltage down to around 8v but there are different value resistors for the various brand coils. You could do a 12v universal coil with an internal ballast or try to keep the original coil and add the resistor separately. If the coil still gets hot then go to a modern 12v universal coil with built in resistor. For the 55-6 cars Packard used a resistor value of 1.40-1.65 ohms for the Delco coil and .665-.735 ohms for the Autolite coils. Napa has a universal resistor but their website gives no specs so do not know how it compares.
