I got a 1949 Packard 2271 off EBAY and I am looking for info on the car. I think it is a renumbered 1948 because the body number is 2271-9-2865, may be the last one built. The VIN number on the title is GH427153CE I think it should be G427153. I found the Briggs body tag and it is 22712866. I also found the build paper on the gas tank filler neck but I cant make out all the numbers but this what I found.
7948 LINE 2 2271-9 X 2865 OD F SE 08 WS 14 401.. The car need some work but it will be a nice car.

If the build sheet shows the '-9' then it's not re-numbered, it's an actual 1949 22nd series.

Edit: Some of the other codes from your build sheet indicate:
X - Paint Code, Black
OD - Overdrive
401 - Interior Trim Code, Tan Shadow Check Broadcloth
The '08' is probably 'OB' for an oil bath air cleaner.

WS - if the same code as used a couple of years later = white sidewall tires.

The difference between the Briggs # and vehicle # is typical of the era. The Briggs represents the sequential production at Briggs, and the vehicle # represents the finished car production sequence at Packard. Finished cars were not necessarily produced in the same order as that in which the bodies were produced. The last 4 digits do occasionally correspond exactly, but more often are +/- 25 digits of each other. Beginning with the 24th series the Briggs and vehicle number are almost always in agreement.

PS - A "-9-" actually could be a renumbered car but in your case it's not. When they were renumbered, the sequential number was "jumped" by 10,000 numbers or so. Wait for Robert Neal's new book for a better explanation.

Thanks for the help on the numbers on my 49. I think I will get all the numbers off my 41 110 coup and see what it is. I has Special on the sides of the hood.

Folks - as you gather numbers please remember that I'm still interested in collecting sets of vehicle numbers and corresponding "thief-proof" or firewall numbers for my continuing research into that subject.

I believe the Motor number GH427153CE or VIN as it is listed is also correct and probably is what is stamped on engine. Don't find a reference to cite at the moment for the H, but on other engines that indicates optional hydraulic lifters. The CE is referenced in Service Counselor 22 #12 as shown.

True, a -9 on the data plate could be a re-numbered car. But if the -9 indicator is on the build sheet as it is in this case, then it came down the line as a 1949 car and cannot be a re-numbered car.

I am certainly looking forward to Robert Neal's book.

Edit: The exception would be the Station Sedan which could have had a -9 build slip and be re-numbered as a 23rd series... but let's not go down that road... it's confusing enough.

Say, Hugh Turnipseed, does that car you bought happen to be silver? I saw that one on e-Bay. That's a nice car! Hope the restoration goes well! You should put your car in the Owner's Registry (look to the side of the site under Main Menu). Good luck!
