I've always used the adhesive specifically recommended by Steele Rubber for this application and find it completely satisfactory. See page 34 of their "Packard" catalog, they recommend 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive.

Steele, largest (by a mile) maker of reproduction rubber parts for the collector car hobby, and the maker of most of the rubber parts that others sell. Get their Packard catalog, there are damn few rubber parts they don't have.
Website link above.

Steele's website is sometimes a P.I.A. to find info within. Not sure where any glue recommendations might be but there are a few video's featuring Steele products. Recommended install methods on various items including a couple on weatherstripping.youtube.com/user/SteeleRubberProducts/videos

I have had good results with 3M super weatherstrip and gasket adhesive 08008 is the black. The yellow is 3M scotch-grip 1300 Most good auto parts stores will have it. Never had a problem with a 3M broduct if used as instructed

contact cement is what i think it is, the good stuff is hard to find, EPA,,, but an auto upholstery place should be able to tell where to get the good stuff...

3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive (black) is also what I use. Any way you look at it, it can be a real PITA to install weatherstripping.
Be sure your surface is clean- preferably newly painted.

Yes, 3M Trim Adhesive.
In addition to the above comments: Spread a thin coat of cement on the weather stripping and on the panel; wait a few minutes until the adhesive becomes tacky; then, attach. Be careful when installing, because you will not be able to separate the weather stripping after it is stuck on the panel. This method was recently demonstrated by a Steele representative on the TV show "My Classic Car" in the show's vendor demo section "Eastwood Garage". Lacquer thinner will clean up any excess adhesive. (o[]o)
