Dear Troys:

To remove the wheel properly requires a special puller that is shaped like a U and has rubber on the prongs to protect the Bakelite.

You can make something from wood and acheive the result or get a very large bearing splitter and make up the fixings to pull the wheel.

In any case the whole process requires great care.

If you are lucky the wheel has never been taken off and so is not over tightened. If you are less fortunate some knucklehead has put it on with an impact.

Steering wheels don't fall of like in The Three Stooges and 35 lbs torque is plenty.

Good luck.

G'day Mike,
to PackardInfo. Looks like you've already received some good advice to which I can't add anything.

And.....I invite you to include your '30 745 in the Packard Owners Registry here on PackardInfo.

DO NOT USE A PULLER! You will just break the wheel.

To begin removing the steering wheel, you need to start from the bottom of the steering gear box!

The basics of the process are described here:

At the bottom of the post are links to photos.

Cheers,

Tom
