And it's powered by three Packard engines....... (although not as strong as a P-51 which only had ONE Packard engine.)
Thought we might find this interesting since it is Packard powered.videos2view.net/PT658.htm

Randy, thanks for refreshing our memory. Below a cutaway of PT-658, click to enlarge. Did you know, that some of them have been delivered to CCCP? The Soviet affinity for Packard is a never-ending story.

Thanks for the detailed cutaway Guscha. These wooden boats did yeoman duty in the Pacific and many were also given to South Korea.

Magnificent as the PT boats looked skipping over the waves at full chat, Black Beerd above sums it well. An ex-Navy friend says the PT boats often ran out of gas after sortees
and had to be towed back to base by destroyers.

... often ran out of gas after sortees That's easily conceivable. How to get 100-octane aviation fuel on the high sea.

I was lucky to have rested my hand on a 4M-2500 earlier today out at the Packard Proving Grounds. We have one on display there courtesy of the Detroit Historical Society.
Damn, I never get tired of seeing that Packard script logo cast into those valve covers. You too can rest your hand on this monster if you come to the 2013 PAC National Meet during the last week of June.
