1951 Exhaust support #426241

I am getting exhaust support part #426241 for my 51 300, I know the one end of the support will attach to the flywheel housing but was curious to how and what attaches to the other end (this is a used part)

My question is that photo of a 51-3 support or is it a 54 item.

In this photo of a 53 engine compartment there looks to be a tab welded to the exhaust pipe the end of the support would bolt onto. That would also hold with the hardware associated with the 51-3 support since there is mention of a second bolt to the pipe -- 51 had a 5/16" bolt plus a nut & washer while the 52-3 went to 1/4".

In 54 there was something called a loop associated with the support instead of a bolt. If that is a stock unmodified support in the photo, the way the bend is made on the support it almost looks like the 90 degree portion lays on the top of the exhaust pipe and some kind of clamp or loop goes around both to hold them together. Perhaps that change was done to cut costs since there was no need for the factory or dealer or aftermarket muffler shop to weld on a tab in a precise location. You could probably duplicate the function of the loop by using a common exhaust pipe clamp.

I was thinking about the visible tab on the 53 exhaust pipe as to whether it is a single tab welded on or a wrap around. Unfortunately the photo is small so there is not much detail and the unraveled duct hose hides enough that you cannot see if there is possibly another tab with a hole behind the loops.

If there is another tab that would make it a wrap around sort of clamp where both halves bolt together with the support in the middle or side. A wrap around clamp is sort of what the 46-50 models used and those clamps could be a pain to spread enough get on the pipe and then pulled together again and held so a nut could thread onto the bolt.

I follow you might have to spot weld a bracket on, its not causing me any problems without it and not sure of its purpose I just like to try and keep the old Packard engineers happy since they had a reason and spent the time on it lol

Huh? The fabric end bolts up high on the bell housing with a short 3/8 bolt and washer. The lower end bolts onto the selfsame lower bellhousing bolt that supports the road draft tube. The hole closest to the bend bolts to the tab on the exhaust pipe. Having this piece on the car keep your exhaust pipe-to-manifold gasket from certain premature death.

Ross, that makes sense and a lot like the 46-50 piece. What or where is the loop they call for in 54 positioned or does that take the place of the welded on tab?

That may explain the different part number for 1954. Some years ago I asked Waldron and they didn't know either and had no 1954 template. I wonder what other differences there were in the exhaust for 1954.
