That Cadillac air filter is similar, but not exactly the same as the Packard. Note the raised areas at the front and rear about where the carb air horn would fit. A guess would be the Cad will have shorter tubes going down to the carb and would sit lower on the engine.

For the past couple of years there's been one of those for sale here at the July swap meet. The Spokane market doesn't think it's worth $1500.

Also, BEWARE of valley covers someone has bead/sand/shot blasted. It's impossible to get all the media out between the spot welded pan underneath. Wash, wash, blow, blow and guaranteed, there will still be grit in there.

the one in the ebay auction I posted is the correct one. correct air horn towers.

there is a shorter version, mostly seen on the chevy. shorter towers pictured below.

Chrysler had one as well, but with indentions at the top. see pic below as well.

Chevy also had one with an offset pod on one side. Packard is both centered.

56 Eldorado is identical to 55/56 Packard air cleaner. only difference is the V on the top and the fancy nuts for the pods. both easily fixed.

Eldorado cleaner is last picture. same as in the ebay auction.

but, yes one must be careful to get the correct air horn tower length and no offset pod.

the one in the auction is perfect and to me worth the asking price, just depends on how bad you want your car to be period correct and not be wearing an edelbrock dual air cleaner.

I don't know if that's entirely an accurate statement as written. Take a good look at bona-fide Packard units and you'll see two types; in one the pods are fixed and in the other they are eccentric so you can rotate and vary the distances between them and the valve covers. Whether the former is 55 and the later 56 or not I don't know, but both are genuine Packard 55/56 batwings. Of the dozen or so 56s I've scrutinized, they all had the pods eccentrically mounted.

Wasn't it the natives on Easter Island whose medium of exchange consisted of stone wheels too large to carry?

FWIW, I just learned of one intake which has changed hands four times in twenty years, $150, $350, $750 and $1200, without ever being installed on a car or gathering the parts to do so.

The Stude market is much larger but still pretty small for aluminum intakes & such.
Perhaps with wax/plastic printing, patterns would be affordable. Aluminum Packard intakes & heads- Hmmm.

Not greed.... It's supply and demand.
