Tranny Questions-

I see there is some sort of screen in my tranny. Should I do some kind of maintenance / cleaning to it while I have the tranny oil pan off?

Also, my new brake shoes came in from Falcon Global, an Ebay company - 4 shoes for the front axle, 79 dollars. The linings are glued on, not riveted, are 2 1/4 inches wide, and the longer lining is 12 1/2 long, the shorter lining is 11 inches long. Free shipping.

Yes. Clean and check for any holes in screen. That is the only "filter" you have.

Do I remove the filter inside of my tranny or clean 'in place'?

If you can see everything well and no holes or obvious junk clogging or inside screen, then probably OK. If you do want to remove, think it's only held on by a couple of bolts. Just slosh in some kerosene & shake dry.

Though I had access to original Raybestos/Manhattan asbestos lining which I could rivet, I chose last time around to use Kanter linings on the front of my 56 Carib. They look very similar in color and texture to your Falcon Global and I suspect they may be from the same Chinese source. I've been more than satisfied with mine. Cost was $30 a wheel (2 shoes).

When I bypass my tranny cooler and put a new model in front of the radiator, I like this idea of replacing the original with a pipe the same diameter as the id of the hose:

Easy to do, go visit a muffler shop and ask them if they have any scraps that might work. New pipe, that is, not some junk that they took off a Honda to replace with the "fart pipes".

That particular piece shown is standard on pre 51 but you'll have to have something made since the bottom radiator connection is straight out on yours instead of bent up for using the factory elbow. The factory piece thickness is .070--roughly 14ga.

Just order the bottom hose from Kanter for a 51-54 car with a manual transmission. It is the correct shape you are looking for.

Nice engine compartment Carl. My '47 Custom Clipper has a similar lower radiator hose arrangement. I painted the pipe engine color. This may not be totally correct, but it looks nice. I also painted the fuel pump heat shield engine color. It shows better than the previous black.
