got the coil wired up last night. need to know what i should do with the black wire coming out of the dizzy. it goes to the ignition switch...but what do i connect it to to do a test start of the car? to the S side of the solenoid??
postive side of coil to ground, black/white wire of dizzy to negative of coil and solid black of dizzy goes to the ignition wire. i'm going to be using a remote starter switch that mechanics use to jump the starter over. got the headers bolted back up now that they are cooled down. i'm sure they will rust one day. now working on the hardware to mount the radiator cradle. as you can see in the pic the bottom pad has as step on it and a spot to fit the spacer. steele rubber is not showing this bottom pad used for the radiator, they are showing a flat pad. i think this is wrong. can someone confirm that the bottom mounting pad is as i have shown in the picture? Steele is trying to say that this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1951-1956-Packard-All-Models-Body-Mounting-Pad-Radiator-Cradle-to-Frame-/390505230982?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5aebecf286&vxp=mtr is supposed to replace the 437004 part number, but i think it should be this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-1956-Packard-Body-Mounting-Pad-/390417658898?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ae6b4b412&vxp=mtr

Put some black head shrink tubing over those plastic terminal connectors. It will look oh so much better! :)

woulda been nice if packard was more specific on the description of the part....
when i measured the bottom pad...it was close to 3/4" so i'm gonna say it was probably 3/4 before being compressed....i'm pretty sure its the pad with the lip....but who the heck knows if it was replaced at some point with the wrong part. the top pad as in the pics....measured 3/8" the bottom was 5/8" here is the original steele part for the top one that i measured as 3/8". steele has it as 1/2" seems resonable that new and uncompressed for 50 years that it would have been 1/2" oringally. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1951-1956-Packard-All-Models-Body-Mounting-Pad-Radiator-Cradle-Frame-/270911468357?hash=item3f1394f345&item=270911468357&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr what did everyone else use during restoration?

I just looked at mine and they are what I would call the 5/16 on the bottom. I made my own out of Flexane but was pretty careful to make things the same thickness as the originals as near as I could determine.
One thing I did notice is the added shim washers on mine. The manual says quantity X so that means as needed. Both sides have 3 on top so with the 3/8 (or 1/2) that would bring things up close to the 3/4 total for that top side spacing. That plus the metal thicknesses and bottom cushion brings the total close to what is usable on the steel bolt spacer. 3/4 on the bottom might be too thick. I don't think the bottom thickness is too critical because the frame is there. All you are doing is absorbing a bit of shock.

figured out my problem Howard.....the pic is upside down.....the top cushion is the bottom one not the top like i'm showing in the pic. the one with the shoulder is the top cushion. steele shows the lip on the top cushion on there website.
and being that the cushion i was calling the top was measured at 3/8 and stock is 5/16....compressed that makes sense now. the top says 1/2" and i got 5/8, but that could have been buldged actually. so here is the bottom cushion.... http://www.steelerubber.com/search?year=1955&make=packard&model=clipper&style=2-door-hardtop&page=4#body-mounting-pad-70-1430-48 and here is the top....look at the pics...steele shows the lip on this on their website. http://www.steelerubber.com/search?year=1955&make=packard&model=clipper&style=2-door-hardtop&page=3#body-mounting-pad-70-1429-48 sorry for the confusion, but thanks as always for your help!!

yes i saw your blog on the radiator. thanks. ;0) yes i hope to be in Salado.
today i painted the radiator....the shop did a crappy job painting it and it was rusting on the side support brackets. so i took some steel wool to it and then painted it lightly. i didn't paint the fins, the shop did that. i also went scowering the autoshops for a 5/16 to 1/4 elbow for the fuel pump...don't know where mine went. 5 bucks for the dumb thing....but it was local at Oreily's if anyone ever needs one on the road. autozone didn't have jack. got my E1095 K&N filter yesterday. it didn't fit in the top pan from edelbrock like the other one. i noticed this filter had a belved edge all the way around. which works out for the inside as it fits the curve of the bottom half of the Packard breather. it made it difficult to keep the edelbrock lid on though. so i ever so carefully bent out the tang on the edelbrock lid to match the curve on the filter and it stayed perfect. this filter and lid with the packard top on site right on the bottom of the packard top. perfect! couple of turns of the wing nut and it was all down. gonna be breather very free now and never really have to touch the thing like oil bath or paper filter. and maybe i'll gain some performance out of it. idk. Is it my imagination or do paper and K & N filters not muffle the intake noise as well as the oil bath filters?
