Yup back corner of drivers side is leaking.... Drip........drip.........drip....... More then one a minute.
Retorqued to about 75lbs... Did slow the leak down some. I did use copper spray when building. Heads were not decked.... Block was. Machine shop said heads were good and didnt need it. I may dump se head gasket sealer in it......don't really feel like taking all that crap back off. So annoyingly upsetting. V8.... What did you do when it leaked from the corner.... New gasket? Hank

I got smoke come from the drop down breather pipe too. and when I stopped the motor, I had smoke coming from the oil filler tube. not much, but you could see it. its getting better and better isn't it.....crap.... watch the breather tube. and the tip of the starter cover. drip....smoke. fart.
can someone tell me what gear that is in, it is all the way towards the rear of the car. I think it is park...but the wheels move a bit when I rev the motor. if I move it one notch towards the front of the car...the tires move forwards fast. and when I went to put it back on notch towards the rear I heard a grind noise. yes I had the rear end up in the air. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VROzRRtjiow" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I also went back and embedded my past two videos on the previous page. shows the coolant leak in the first video. Reving motor...probably shouldn't have done that. idk. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4E_pccScivI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> edit: frustration is setting in...time to just walk away.

No chance the gaskets were swapped right to left and are now on upside down?

Kev. I believe the embossed part of the gasket is upwards and the flat part down. so I'm pretty sure they are correctly installed. the passenger's side doesn't leak at all.
Ross, yeah in neutral the tires really spin...which is odd...isn't the point of neutral to not have wheels spinning and the car moving? I'm nervous with it up in the air on a jack and then the thing falls and jacks my car all up driving down the driveway...that is why I left it in park. I think extra jack stands are in order before I do that. I will start it again tomorrow and idle it higher for long periods. just super disappointed with all my leaks. I worked so hard and to do everything so smoothly. but...it is my first engine and trans build. thanks to EVEYRONE that follows my blog. I really can't thank you guys enough for your experience. It makes this frustrating time, easier, and makes me...being a younger generation...stick with it. cause I can tell you...I have already wanted to throw the towel in and just sell the damn thing. I still have some patience to learn as I grow older. thanks ever so much. I'm hoping this coolant leak will eventually fix itself. also fyi...the Mobil 1 full synthetic ATF...seems to be working great. no noises. but I can't do much more then what i'm doing right now...so we will see. reminder I have the GM material.

Hank,
You have so much time, effort, expense, and emotion invested in this project and it is very disappointing to have these problems. A new head and manifold gasket are cheap, pennies on the dollar so to speak. Everyone has had problems with an engine rebuild, don't beat yourself up. Fix it right and you will be better off in the long-run. The wheels spinning while the transmission is in neutral should not be a concern. If the car was on the ground it would not move, but up in the air you get wheel motion. The fluid coming out of the drain in the bell housing looks to me like trans fluid. This should stop as the seals and bushings seat. I agree with Ross, the engine needs to run for a long time at a high idle speed to do an initial break-in. Short runs are murder on a newly rebuilt engine. You are right, time to walk away and give it a break. Take care and things will work out. (o{]o)
