My Power steering pump was noisy, so I am installing a new bearing, seal and O rings. I got the bearing pressed on the shaft, and the New seal in, but I don't like the way this New O Ring looks compared to what I took out.....I have kit 436449 from Max meritt. Should I look for a different ring to seal this?
Thanks!
Note, old seal is in my hand, and the new seal is on the pump.

Is the new seal a large o-ring, while an old one is a flat washer type?
I would definitely inquire with the kit supplier about that. This does not seem right.

You might be able to cut the proper seal from the universal gasket material of applicable thickness.

And if you decide you want to change to a more stock rectangular type and cannot find a size to fit in Germany, McMaster-Carr has a wide selection of square, rectangular, or X shape rings where you might find one to be a close match.

Oh, that's in Germany...
Do you have an illustration of the other side of the pump, that would be pressing against the seal? Depending upon the way it is made, maybe an o-ring might work as well.

An O Ring of about 65mm diameter and 2 or 3 mm thick looks like it would fit. The other side of the mating surface is flat. That pump does make high pressure. 650 psi I belive, so I need to get this right. These things take time to do right.

Yeah PS is definitely high pressure. IIRC on the 55's it was 800PSI, and abnormal over 900.

Pressure out has more to do with steering brand than year. Bendix which was used from introduction thru 56 will range from 550 to 800 psi. Starting in 55 Monroe units which were also used along with Bendix have extra springs in the pump relief valve to raise their pressure range to 650 to 900 psi. Pumps except for relief valve are identical in operation and looks. Identifier is Monroe pumps have a 900 stamped on the output port and there is a caution not to intermix the pumps as it will cause erratic action and noise issues.

I ordered some O rings, so will try that in a few days.
This car needs some tlc, my uncles kind of neglected some maintenace the last few years so I am righting that. The water pump is off, since that also leaked. Man, the coolant System is rusty and muddy. I pulled the water distribution tube and cleaned that. Also flushed the radiator, and will also flush out the block and head to get some junk out of the coolant System. I have a new Timing chain, so I think I will also install that while I have things apart.
Even the inside of the water pump was badly rusted. I have another pump that is in mutch better shape that I will use. In the pic are the two plates from the two pumps I have. Love the Winter projects.

I'm being my own Mule and going to NYC for the weekeend so my suitcase will have the old waterpump as a core that I will mail back to Kanter, and I'll be bringing back a rebuilt pump from them, as well as new hydraulic rams from HydroElectric and a few other misc. Packard parts.
Water pump is pretty heavy for my luggage, so I will have to skimp on clean clothes
