Some of the dealers (mostly the larger ones) used a jig to keep the letters and numbers aligned.

Here's the special tool Packard offered to dealers to stamp the dealer name and dates on the plates. Obviously a lot of them didn't use it, it amazes how poorly some were done, and many left blank.

Where sells the correct patent plate for 1946-47 21st series?

Pulfer-Williams version is not correct

For certain the P&W plate is not correct. Also it seems that there were running changes on the plate between the resumption of production in 1946 and the last use of this plate type on early 22nd series cars. I've seen 21st series cars without the "DE" patents listed and ending in 2,069,924. Here's a plate from a very early 22nd series car and I've also seen this plate on several late 21st series cars.

We were speaking earlier in this thread about how carelessly some dealers entered the dealer and date information - this one looks like it was scratched with a nail. Nice delivery date though! This car now belongs to "GTO", an occasional visitor to these pages.

I know we are a little off topic with metal stamps as opposed to ink, however I am curious, O_D, what is the date (tool catalog, etc) of the stamping set you show? Reason for question is I have one of these dealer stamps and believe the design was particular for the orientation of a certain series/years of Data Plates. Thx.

Hi Dave:

I don't know just when that stamp set (ST-710) was introduced or for how long it remained as an available Packard special tool. The image is from the "Special Tools - Shop Equipment" catalog for the Eight, Super Eight and Twelve issued January 1935 with a special supplement for the newly introduced "120".

The smaller rectangular patent plate was in use thru the 14th series but the space allocated for the dealer name on the new style square plate was about the same so I'd guess it was applicable for use right up thru the early 22nd series plates. I don't have a later Packard Special Tool catalog to confirm that.

Here's where it all began. Prior to this plates for some years and models listed patent numbers, others did not. What they had in common was only a space for the vehicle number.

There are enough anomalies and curiosities on patent plates to last us for months of discussion. Maybe we should start a separate thread if it's of continuing interest.

If it helps - the original patent plate on my 48 is attached with round head slotted screws, and the Briggs plate with Phillips screws .

Here are two pictures of the data plate from my 1948 Station Sedan. It is steel and stamped, pics showing both sides. It was held on with four round head slotted screws, those are now in use on my repro plate.

One more to add, I don't think this has ever been removed except when it was stamped.
