The transmission cooler lines are also referred to as the "lube line". They are the oil return line from the torque converter and are low pressure. Thus putting a full flow oil filter in line will not affect pressures.
Many modern vehicles have such filters in addition to the pick up filter as standard equipment. The ultramatic filter is just a screen.

That is how mine is, inline, can't remember if top fitting is the return line.
mine goes from trans to cooler, back to radiator cooler then back to trans. riki

IIRC the Trans filter on 56's can be removed and cleaned. SEE service manual. I'm not sure about previous years.

Took mine in to change fluid but didn't get there because we did not dare free the dipstick/filler tube from the pan.
Mechanic was leery of applying more force to the nut? Any ideas?

Brute force is a big favorite, or failing that, unbolt the top of the dipstick from the back of the cylinder head (easily done while the car is on the lift by reaching up behind the inner fender) and bringing the whole thing down together.

Pat Green. Does the trans leak much oil????
I've removed the trans pan on my 56 (no removal of dipstick tube)using jack stands. That's all i have. Jack up BOTH ends of the car. Not just the front.

To report:
Got the fluid changed to Trickshift stuff (original). Have driven about 500 miles on it. Trans groans a bit at 45-50; otherwise no significant change. Still clunks going into direct drive at times. Car is in now for windshield and padded dash.....
