Also, one other thing I found was the shift lever shaft had two seals on it. One was driven over the other.

Not an uncommon finding.

How we coming along Kev? I see you must be giving the PS setup a look at and planning.

Sorry just been swapped the last couple of weeks, so have not managed to get back in the garage.

I received a new inner shifter arm from Joel (thanks Joel!), I just need to drill the hole for the roll-pin in it. I think that was a '56 change to keep the shift arm indexed correctly.

Trying to get thought the transmission before I start on the PS. Both because of space to work on it, and my own sanity.

A little more work on the transmission today. I had to drill the hole in the inner shift arm for the roll pin. So one I transferred the measurements from the old one to the new one, I was abe to drill it match it up with the old broken one. Then I was able to reassemble the shift mech.

The I move on to reassembling the high-range clutch. I replaced the lip seal and the shaft sealing ring. (no pics of that)

The I put the clutch pack back together, prelubing with ATF along the way. Pics show the rest.

I always started working on the Planetary assemble. But haven't finished that yet as a have a couple of questions I need Ross to answer first.

I have stacks of the clutch disks that came with a stock of new Packard parts that I bought years ago from a San Jos? dealer and most are like yours but others aren't. Are they all the same in your transmissions?

The disks are all the same size in the ultramatics I belive. But these are faced with modern Raybestos friction material instead of the original cork.

Thank you and that's what I thought. Most of mine are like yours but others have finer teeth and look different overall so I suspect the odd ones are Chrysler as I think the dealer had switched over.
