As far as I know, this era of Packards should have an AC filter unit so I can't advise on the Carter type.

Odd as pretty much every Clipper I've seen had this same Carter type, with the short bowl and element.

Since they were technically an accessory (PA455381), perhaps dealers installed the Carter ones as they made better margins on them. Similar to why they always used those Yankee mirrors instead of Packards own.

Also, for reference, the number on top of the Carter is their general patent number and has no relevance to the actual model of the unit.

As the fuel pump was AC and the filter was an accessory to the fuel system, AC would make more sense. However, by now and with the Carter type possibly being more commonly available over the years, it would be very possible for many cars to have since been fitted with it. I used to have quite a few of them new in the box that I bought from a local auto parts store. My 1956 Clipper has Carter but it also has a Carter pump. For the earlier cars, though, the two are totally interchangeable as an assembly so it matters little which it has other than in knowing which element to use!

The Carter 30-82 replacement is the correct one. About $8 on Amazon and comes with a new gasket.

New on left, not sure it is coated with something blue. Hit it with some brake cleaner and it didn't come off. It for sure is more porous that my one.

Sunday we went a local car show thrown by the Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society.

The Clipper took their "History on the Road" Award.

Pretty much the first picture of the '54 I have. A few changes since then.

Congratulations on the "History on the Road" award. I remember my secret pride as if it were today when I just happened to drive past a classic car event in a ZIL and on this occasion the only photo was taken, which was later shown in the local press.

Since I don't have extensive Packard knowledge, this information is important. Otherwise I might have missed the changes mentioned over the last 17 years.
