We have refill the engine with 20 W 50 oil.
Now, the noise comes when the engine is cold, then it goes away ... for 10 minutes. Then noise again ... Is the Oldsmobile oil pump the only solution or is it an other ? I we change the hydraulic tappets ? I plan to revolve it in 2016. Could not stay as is. The engine has been restored less than 10 years ago.

I sold over 60 Olds oil pump adapter kits before I turned production and sales of it over to Jack Vines. I had 100% satisfaction (a lot of feedback) in correcting low oil pressure and severe tappet noise problems. It's not an expensive solution either compared to new tappets or an engine overhaul -- once you get the oil pan off (itself a PITA). craig

By the way, I did some fluid dynamics calculations for Ross's modification. Assuming the shaft has an average amount of wear, it's only about 1% pressure loss.

Do you guys think that the fact that the pickup is a rotatable slip fit could cause air to enter the oil system there? I was thinking how a lot of times the "1qt full" trick seemed to work in the past, which would probably drown the floating pickup.
The other explanation is simply that the crankshaft helps to kick up oil, which is sucked into the "funnel" at the top of the pump, preventing air getting sucked into the rotating shaft. Packard advised never to overfill by more than a pint, which implies that some interference would occur at the quart overfull level.

A good question about possibly having some interference with overfilling and maybe some aeration would be the result. The extra quart might raise the sump volume enough to reach the crank. On the floating pickup allowing air in, Packard used essentially the same design since the 30s and I don't recall reported issues with any of those inline type pumps having the air problem.

Thanks Howard. I figured as such, also considering Ross's mod to pressurize the shaft seems to cure this ill. More of a "food for thought".
